Charlotte Digges Moon, born in Virginia, became one of just six Southern Baptist workers upon her arrival in China. She was a missionary in China for nearly 40 years and was instrumental in forming the first Christmas Offering in 1888. To be more approachable to the Chinese, she dressed like them and became a traveling evangelist to reach more people. During an extensive famine, she gave up her food to the Chinese people and as a result lost her life due to starvation. The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering commemorates her life poured out for others.
